Aakash-'sky' in Hindi, is an educational tablet from the government of India developed by a team of students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
Indian government made a deal with a London based technology maker DataWind to mass-produce the tablet. As a result, Aakash is now available for a price of just $35 for students in India and $60 for common users across the world.
Aakash has already received 3 lakh pre launch bookings and Datawind has entered into a manufacturing agreement with companies at two more places in Cochin and Noida for meeting the demand. It is currently being manufactured near Hyderabad but with sales expected to hit 50 lakh units by end 2012
